Titus Chapter 2

Today I’m going to continue my study on Paul’s letter to Titus, in chapter 2 Paul is giving instructions on how we should live our lives, treat each other. Before I go further I believe that husbands and wives should be patient with each other and share the workload within their family life and respect each other.

In verse 1 we see that Paul is reminding his readers that they are to teach their household “sound doctrine” [ESV], and not to interpret Scripture to suit their ideology, desires etc. I find it interesting that Paul places this first before instructing his readers on how they are to live, in some commentaries the writers think that Paul was not just referring to theological doctrine but also ethical doctrine / teaching. Households who Titus was reaching out to were being influenced by ‘Cretan Teachers’ whose teachings went against Christian ethical teachings, for instance marriage did not have to be between one man and one woman, and that extramarital affairs was the norm in the Cretan culture.

In verse 11 Paul reminds his readers that Christ’s offer of Salvation is for everyone and not just the Jews, before reinforcing what he said in the previous verses in verse 12, in how his readers are to live their lives according to Scripture and not to the teachings of the Cretans teachings.

We see in this part of Paul’s letter to Titus that the problems the church in today’s society is facing for instance liberal thinking, secularism, sexual relationships outside of marriage are similar to the problems that the church faced when Paul was writing his pastoral letters to Titus and Timothy. In Romans 1:32 Paul writes “Though they know God’s decree that those who practise such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practise them.” [ESV] How many of our friends who profess to be followers of Christ have started to believe unsound doctrine? and tell their friends that Jesus didn’t mean……. when he said……..?

This coming week think about your life, have you been drawn to unsound doctrine, teachings? For some physical action will be needed to turn their lives around, for others being accountable to a close grounded friend will be needed. Have any of your family or friends been drawn to lifestyles which go against Scripture? If you feel that a family member or friend have started to live their lives against God’s teachings pray and seek His wisdom on how He wants you to approach the situation.
