What Bible verse helps you in your time of darkness?

I recently heard a Q&A session with the late R.C Sproul and he remembers once being asked, if he were going to prison in solitary confinement and he could take one Bible verse printed on a card what would it be and why?

This made me think out all the verses I like that are ‘short’ which do I know off by heart, thus allowing me to take another longer verse on card with me; the answer not many. This is partly due to my dyslexia which affects my short term memory, and laziness as I can always ‘Google’ it if necessary.

So this week I made an effort to memorise the verse which always helps me when I down, questioning / angry with God, the verse in question is Job 38:4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” [NRSV]

This verse for me is a stark reminder that before God started creation He knew the sacrifice, upset, pain I a sinner would cause Him, and still; He not only created the Universe, the Earth but out of love created me and still He loves me despite my failings.

This question also reminded me how reliant I have become on technology yes I have numerous Bibles, commentaries to help me when I’m preparing a sermon. But how would I cope if the internet went down / was wiped when in conversation with an unbeliever, new believer? I know I will not be a person who can recite numerous Bible verses in conversation, but I want to be able to paraphrase Bible verses and be able to reference which book they can be found in.

We are called to be His ambassadors 2 Corinthians 5:20 “So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” [NRSV] Ambassadors are sent by their government, company to rely a message sometimes written, other times verbally. We are to proclaim God’s message to the lost and we can only do so if we take time to learn Scripture, and live it out in our daily lives.

This week think, which Bible verse keeps you on track with God when your going through struggles? And how many Bible verses do you know either word-for-word or paraphrased knowing which books of Bible they are in.
